Google Talk on Port 80
This is a very short tutorial on how to connect to Gmail using Pidgin over port 80. Some of my beloved readers behind the Great Firewall of China and some on really restrictive networks have requested this. Enjoy.
1. Download and install Pidgin client.
2. Configure the client with the following settings do not make changes to anything that I don't specify in here:
Note: If you already have it install pull it up and go to: Accounts > Manage Accounts > Add
Basic (tab)
Login Options:
Protocol: Google Talk or XMPP
Username: Your Gmail username
Domain: gmail.com
Resource: Gmail
Password: Your Gmail password
Check the box Remember Password
Advanced (tab)
Require SSL/TLS: checked
Force old (port 5223) SSL: un-checked
Connect port: 80
3. Click Save

Read my post on tunneling your connection. Set that up for FireFox and you should then after be able to access Gmail and log in to chat from gmail. Hell you might even be able to access Gmail right now if they haven’t blocked it.

It appears that organizations are now blocking the google talk servers as well as the XMPP port which is what is happening for me (re: http://csshyamsundar.wordpress.com/2007/03/07/blocking-google-talk-in-your-organization/)
